Lady Christine
Lady Christine sank down onto her chair in the great hall, clutching her handkerchief. She was utterly exhausted. Her normally fair skin looked almost ghostly white and fatigue clouded her light blue eyes.
Her hair, which usually glowed with golden strands, was dull and untidy. She had not kept to her normal beauty routine because of the vast volume of work that had been required in Lord Loganâs absence. Just that morning she had snapped at her ladies. âLeave it!â she yelled, throwing the comb to the ground. âI have no time for such trivial petting.â
The ladies complained to the cook. âThe mistress is once again in a foul mood. I donât know how much more of this I can bear. I hope Captain Julian returns soon with Lord Logan so that she can once again be her normal self.â
Lady Christine was naturally a kind-hearted woman, but the strain of the last few weeks had begun to wear her down. She struggled to concentrate on the dayâs activities and listening to the peopleâs fears and complaints drained her even more.
She had called the jester several times in the past few days to help settle her nerves. How she longed to see Lord Logan, who could sense when her moods would turn and was always quick with soothing words or great big hugs that were tender and strong at the same time. She longed to feel his arms around her and bury her head into his chest.
The people were troubled and longed for their beloved leader. While Lady Christine was kind and well-loved, she was no warrior, and without Lord Logan, she could not hope to defend the villagers against enemies who envied their prosperity.
She could only pray that Captain Julian would be able to negotiate the release of her husband with the ransom the people had so willingly given. While the neighbouring Lords controlled their people with fear, Lord Logan was a leader who the people would willingly sacrifice for.
Lord Logan had left to find the Medicine Woman he hoped would help cure her of her recurring illnesses. Perhaps even one day enable them to have a child of their own. She felt guilty that the people were now living in fear because their Lord had abandoned them to look for a remedy for her.
The Lady Christine had, over the years, held so many of the villagersâ babies, and her longing had grown stronger with each year. After Nathanâs arrival, he had filled some of the void, but even the stable boyâs special bond with her could not still her desire for a baby of her own. Now the promise of a child was one she would gladly abandon if she could just have Lord Logan safely return to her.
The strident sound of the trumpets blared nearby, and the hunting dogs all leapt up at the same time and ran barking into the courtyard. Lady Christineâs fatigue vanished, as she jumped up, lifted her skirts and ran, in a very unladylike fashion, towards the courtyard.
